A first international finals appearance for the Austrians in ten years, and it fair to say they would have struggled to qualify if not hosting the event. Rumours abound that there are local protests for the team to withdraw and avoid embarrassment. The nation could do with some positive press.

Recent results have not been a total disaster, despite blowing a three goal lead against the Netherlands, and plenty of youngsters in the squad raises hopes that they can keep the locals interested into the second week at least.

EURO 2008 GROUP B:  AUSTRIA - CROATIA - GERMANY - POLAND

Main man: Andreas Ivanschitz

I'm assuming being known as the 'Austrian Beckham' is a compliment; albeit maybe not in footballing terms, but Ivanschitz has become the star man and captain of his national team despite being only 24. The man from Red Bull Salzberg will be charged with inspiring a host dubious that their men can produce, but a few sweet swings of the left boot from Andreas will seduce like a magic flute.

One to watch: Martin Harnik

Austrians have waited a long time for the next Toni Polster and 20 year old Harnik may be the next forward to try on the crown. Helped Werder Bremen to second in the Bundesliga and played in the Champions League; he has won only 2 caps for his country, but came on and scored the equaliser in a friendly against the Czech Republic. Will be pushing for a starting place in a team that needs some dare.
