Euro 2008 team profile: Netherlands
Netherlands
The Netherlands have underachieved at international level since their Euro 88 victory, with a whole host of skilled performers gracing the orange shirt before falling off the wagon in the later stages. Van Basten remains in charge of a team facing both internal and external pressure.
If the coach can channel the energy in the right way it's easy to see them making a mark on the tournament, despite a defence that looks vulnerable. Ill discipline has been their downfall in the past and it would be no suprise if it reared its ugly head once more.
EURO 2008 GROUP C: FRANCE - ITALY - NETHERLANDS - ROMANIA
Main man: Wesley Sneijder
The Dutch have serious attacking ammo and Sneijder has shown with Madrid this year he may be the best of the lot. Can play with both feet and very dangerous to give him any opportunity to hit one from range. It's unclear as yet how van Basten will utilise his troops but with Wesley and a rejuvinated Rafael van der Vaart in midfield they have serious carving potential.
One to watch: Orlando Engelaar
Only won four international caps at age 28 but the giant Twente midfielder has gained favour with van Basten and can expect to play some part in the finals. Engelaar is in the Vieira mould but can charge into the box and possesses a sweet left foot. Likely to give Premiership strugglers something to fight over this summer, at worst.
