Euro 2008 team profile: Poland
Poland
Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker was appointed after a poor showing in the 2006 World Cup, and his influence has been positive, trumping Portugal to finish top of their qualifying group. They have never previously reached a European Championship finals.
After years of mediocrity there finally seems to be some young Polish talent emerging. Usually play a lone striker, but plenty of width with pacy wingers, and another side drilled to their strengths.
EURO 2008 GROUP B: AUSTRIA - CROATIA - GERMANY - POLAND
Main man: Ebi Smolarek
Nine goals in qualifying for the man from Racing Santander, and he will have to have his shooting boots on if Poland are to progress through this tournament, although he is also a provider if those around him can put themselves about. That being said, it is asking a bit much to lead both midfield and attack, and the hardiness of the defence will decide their progress.
One to watch: Jakub Błaszczykowski
A flying winger who can take people on as well as help out in defence, 'Kuba' has gone down a storm at Borussia Dortmund, establishing himself in the first team at 22. Beenhakker places a good deal of significance on his wingers, spreading the play and attacking the flanks while able to drop back when the team loses possession. Błaszczykowski fits this system perfectly and could win a few admirers before they run out of steam.
