Euro 2008 team profile: Spain

Spain

Little needs to be about Spain's record in major tournaments; failure is constant. Once again they qualified with ease, and have a squad which should breed success. Luis Aragones has paved a rocky road as manager but little has suggested he is the man to work the oracle.

Fernando Torres and David Villa up front will give any opposition defenders the sweats, but for all the skills on show in midfield they lack a domineering presence. A coming-of-age performance from Fabregas would be ideal but the squad may have better chances in the coming years.

EURO 2008 GROUP D:  GREECE - RUSSIA - SPAIN - SWEDEN

Main man: Cesc Fabregas

Spain have quality in all areas, but if they are to win the tournament they need to control the central areas and avoid being bullied off the ball. An on-song Fabregas is up to the job, but he was showing serious signs of fatigue at the end of the Premiership season, and Spain fans must hope that the break has reinvigorated the boy wonder. Torres and Villa could do with a few waves of the wand.
